Meats and vegetables and soups and ferments are wonderful. At some point, though, it’s fun to have a bit more variety! Fruit is nice, light contrast to heavier and more savory foods. And after going through several of the GAPS diet introduction stages, having some fruit will totally feel like eating dessert!

Nice and easy

Cooking the apples helps to make them easier to digest. Later on, raw fruit is introduced in the GAPS introduction diet. But for now, a cooked fruit is easier for the body to handle.

Apple are a nice, mild fruit, and are usually tolerated well. And who doesn’t like applesauce?

Toppings to choose from

It’s important to enjoy this GAPS applesauce recipe with a healthy fat mixed in. The fat will help keep your blood sugar balanced while you’re eating the natural sugars found in fruit.

My favorite fat to top this GAPS applesauce recipe with is homemade raw milk sour cream. I have a blog post on how to make sour cream from raw milk, and you can check it out here. To me, the combo reminds me of eating apple pie with ice cream on the side. Super yummy!

Other fats that can go on this applesauce are ghee, coconut oil, tallow, and even duck fat. They are actually all delicious, in their own way.

Keeping it simple

If you have a machine that can peel, core, and slice apples, that’s great. But if you don’t, you can definitely still make this GAPS applesauce recipe. Just do the peeling, coring, and slicing by hand.

The same thing goes for mashing or blending. You can keep the apples in chunks, or mash them with a fork for a chunkier applesauce. Or, put them into a blender and puree them until they’re smooth.

Sometimes it’s nice to have different textures at different times. Variety is always fun, and is especially nice when your diet is already somewhat limited in other ways.
