This easy breakfast is a blast for kids to make and it’s especially great for back to school breakfast! Let kids put on their favorite fruit or sprinkle toppings and you can even add them to the mix!

When we were shopping Kay asked me for this adorable little waffle maker. I really thought, will this thing even make a good waffle? Aside from being adorable, it’s extremely affordable! I kinda wish I bought two so we could make more than one waffle at a time. They’re super cute and fun for kids that want to get into the kitchen for Mini Chef Mondays!

How to make waffle batter:

(waffle batter recipe is on the bottom of this post)

We’re the dump it all into a bowl and mix type, but with thisrecipe, we do suggest mixing the liquids and then adding the dry ingredients.

The main reason is we don’t want to overwork the flour trying to beat the eggs! If you overwork the flour you’ll overwork the gluten and then you’ll have a tough waffle. No one wants a tough waffle! You’ll see tons of different recipes online. We tried a few and there were some we liked and some we didn’t like. Some said to beat the yolks separate and then whip the egg whites for a fluffier waffle. The end result for us, the whipped actually had a much fluffier texture, but reminded us more of a pancake texture so we prefer to keep them together. When we started making our own recipe we took a few things into consideration.

  1. an easy recipe for kids.
  2. a recipe that kids would love.
  3. freezer friendly

To freeze fresh waffles just lay them on a parchment lined cookie sheet and then place in the freezer in a single layer. Once the waffles are frozen place into a freezer safe container.

You can use real buttermilk, to make homemade buttermilk waffles but since we have buttermilk sensitivities in our house we make a homemade buttermilk recipe.

Easy Homemade Buttermilk Recipe:

Combine a cup of milk (minus 1 tablespoon) with a tablespoon of vinegar or lemon juice. Allow to set for 3-5 minutes. This causes the milk to slightly curdle but this is what you want, give a good mix and it’s ready to go.

Choosing a waffle maker:

I do think wemay upgrade eventually, but for now, we’re really digging this adorable mini waffle maker! If you have a larger family we suggest getting more than one of these mini waffle makers or a waffle maker that makes more than one waffle. This one is perfect for our family of 3. It takes about 5-6 minutes per waffle and we just put the already cooked waffles into a warm oven until they’re all done. The waffle maker we have comes in quite a few colors, Mini Chef Kay had to have the pink! 🙂

I’m actually anxious to buy a few more products like this one! They have a grill and griddle in addition to the waffle maker. Have you tried them?

Thank you for this wonderful recipe! I also tried 4 other waffle recipes today for my son’s new mini Dash wafflemaker. This recipe was by far the best!!!! Thank you. We even used these waffles with havarti cheese in the middle and the flavors were phenomenal!

I just tried your recipe today with our new dash waffle maker and it was perfect! We tried one other recipe and it didn’t turn out, it was like glue on the waffle maker. We actually bought two dash waffle makers but I wanted to try one more recipe before I kept the second one and your recipe was perfect for me to know that this recipe was a keeper, and having two dash waffle irons is key! It would be great for a breakfast buffet with friends! Thank you for sharing!

If we are using buttermilk, what is the measurement for that? or do we replace the regular milk with the buttermilk and still add the vinegar?

The milk is used as buttermilk as we do not purchase and make a “faux buttermilk”.

We just made a half batch of this then I couldn’t find my mini dash so I used my regular size waffle maker. They tasted great and I loved the crispy outside with the still soft interior. We will definitely make them again! I followed the recipe except for adding a little extra vanilla since we like everything with more vanilla. 🙂
