McDonald's Egg McMuffin recipe can easily be replicated in your own home, and can just as easily be used to make the Sausage McMuffin with Egg too!

I love this easy recipe, not only because this copycat Egg McMuffin tastes exactly like my favorite breakfast sandwich from McDonald's, but also because the homemade version is so easy to customize with your favorite ingredients once you master the basics.

What is it?

McDonald's Egg McMuffin is a classic fast food breakfast sandwich consisting of a cooked egg patty, melty cheese, and hot Canadian bacon on a toasted and buttered English muffin. However, the best thing about this delicious sandwich is that it only requires those simple ingredients, which makes it easy to replicate in your own kitchen!

If you are looking to replicate more of your favorite McDonald's flavors, you will want to try my insanely popular homemade Big Mac Sauce recipe too!

Ingredients & Substitutions

  • English Muffin- Although McDonald's doesn't serve croissant breakfast sandwiches, croissants do make a phenomenal substitution when you are ready for something different.
  • Canadian bacon - McDonald's Egg McMuffin recipe uses Canadian bacon, however, if you wish to cook up a Sausage Egg McMuffin, you will just substitute breakfast sausage instead. Form the sausage patties into large flat circles and cook in a skillet. The patty will shrink as it cooks, so make sure you start with a patty larger than the English muffin.
  • Freshegg
  • American cheese - I personally prefer using mild Cheddar cheese slices on most fried egg sandwiches, but American cheese is the best choice for homemade Egg McMuffins.
  • Butter - I strongly recommend using butter rather than substituting olive oil.
  • Egg ring - The trick toreplicating the classic McDonald's Egg McMuffin is creating the round eggs. The best way I have found to do this with items you'll find around the house is to use a metal round cookie cutter or mason jar lid. Just spray the inside of the ring with pam to ensure the egg doesn't stick, and you are ready to cook! Ingenious, right? Otherwise, a better way is to use these cool egg rings on Amazon.com.

How to make it

Begin making this copycat Egg McMuffin recipe by lightly toasting your English muffin. You want the interior to be beginning to brown, with deliciously crisp edges. At the same time, place your greased egg ring in a buttered frying pan set over medium heat on your stovetop.

Add one large egg to the egg ring and pierce the yolk with a fork. Sprinkle the egg with a light dusting of salt, then add one ice cube to the skillet and cover the pan with a lid. The ice cube will create steam which will help cook the top of the egg while the bottom cooks.

Once the egg is firm, remove the ring mold and flip the egg and briefly cook it further until it is fully cooked. At this time the Canadian bacon slice can also be added to the skillet and cooked until heated through. This should only take a few seconds per side.

Assemble your breakfast sandwich by placing a slice of cheese on the bottom slice of the English muffin, then top with egg, meat, and finally the upper slice of toast. Serve immediately with homemade hash browns.

  • 1 large egg
  • 1 slice American cheese

  • Add a slice of American cheese to the bottom half of the English muffin.

  • Top cheese with egg patty.

  • Add Canadian bacon and cover with the top slice of the English muffin.

I have 4" rings for making my own English Muffins and I coat them with butter and the add the egg. I have had no problems with the egg sticking to the muffin ring. I will try the the ice cube trick and see I will how that works.

Awesome recipe, but I would not recommend cooking in a tuna can or any other can for that matter since cans are lined with a plastic coating that helps keep the food inside fresh and safe. You don’t want that leaching into your food as it cooks!

Also, you need to use real butter and Kraft deluxe American cheese. I was a McDonals store manager. For your Big Mac sauce, you need to use Kraft Mayo.

If you get the pre-cooked Great Value brand sausage patties from Walmart, it will taste exactly the same. Also, if you get the Pillsbury frozen biscuits, you can make a sausage biscuit.

I'm still thinking there's something different about the McDonald's version of the sausage mcmuffin with egg perhaps a secret spice we don't know but there's a flavor that can't be duplicated at home until maybe that secret is made public. Maybe its the type of sausage they have or something in the muffin itself but it's definitely unique.

    • Fox Valley Foodie

Yes, I suspect they use a proprietary sausage blend. I recommend trying a few different brands and see which one you feel is the best fit.

I recommend Jimmy Deans sausage in a roll form frozen with different types or flavors like maple, bacon, sage and onion for the sausage and form your own pattues. That might give you the flavor your looking for.

I’ve started making em and started with making my sausage. I buy 2lbs of Tennessee Pride mild sausage & 1lb of Tennessee Pride sage sausage. Mix together and add my spicy seasonings and they are GREAT!

When making lasagna, I like to add a little fennel seed to the sausage meat -- it really adds something special -- perhaps a bit for this recipe might make it tastier? I can't say I've noticed that flavor in McD's, but it's good. (a little goes a long way).

If you want to duplicate the "folded egg" do this: Spray a 4" pyrex custard bowl with cooking spray, lightly whisk one egg into it, maybe with a tsp of water or milk, and microwave on 70% for 90 sec. The egg will puff up while cooking, but settles down nicely. I top with a slice of cheese while the English muffin is toasting.

Genius...I don't eat at McDonalds since I was diagnosed with Celiac disease, but I always loved the eggs on the breakfast sandwiches. I can't wait to try the ice trick. I had always wondered how to do that!

Hey man, I do enjoy your writing. I've only read one post so far, I'll admit, and it's this one, obviously, but it makes me want to read more, which I will definitely do. Your style is unique. I won't admit to going to McDonalds. I guess that makes me more than a food snob. It makes me a food liar, because I go on long McDonalds binges now and then, but I just won't admit it. That stuff is chemically engineered to be tasty, and I'm as susceptive to science as anyone, I guess. I would love to make this at home and then take it with me in the car and pretend I'd gone through drive-through.
