Hi. Should the chicken be cooked first?

  3. Momma Cyd says:

The chicken is not cooked first. Just dice it up and then it cooks for 6 hours on low.

i did 3 cut potatoes on bottom then cut up 4 boneless sickness chicken breasts into cubes put that on top of the potatoes seasoned with 1/2 tsp of garlic n onion powder, 1/4 tsp of pepper then i added 3 cut up bacon srrips and then added in 1 can of cheese soup and half the shredded cheddar cheese and then i added in 1 cup of milk ... put the other 3 potatoes i cut up on top and seasoned again with 1/2 tsp of onion n garlic powder, then added the other 3 bacon stirps i cut up then added 1 can of cheese soup and topped with rest of shredded cheddar cheese then i added in 2 cups of heavy whipping cream and 1 more cup of milk cause i was a bit worried wouldn't be enough liquid cooking now on high... i'm just hoping i didn't add too much liquid lol I crockpot a lot and know a cup of liquid will not do n cook everything... i always do 2 cups of liquid to all my recipes and it comes out delicious but i was worried today cause heavy whipping cream is an agent that thickens everything and i wanted a cheese creamy kinda sauce... after the chicken and shredded cheese pouring in a cup of whole milk that cheese kinda soaked it up pretty quickly aslo why i wanted to make sure had enough liquid so it all cooks but still comes out creamy cheese deliciousness so we shall see when it's all done tonight ..... thanks for sharing your recipe... this is the first time i'm cooking this kinda meal... I can't wait to see how it comes out tonight :^)

  8. K M Stearns says:

Can this be frozen uncooked and if so, how long to cook from frozen?

  9. Patty says:

Sounds delicious! How would I cook this in a 9x13 in the oven if I didn't have a slow cooker or IP?

  10. Momma Cyd says:

You will want to look into this before freezing. Potatoes don't do as well. You should really only freeze cooked or partially cooked potatoes, as raw potatoes contain a lot of water. This water freezes and, when thawed, makes the potatoes mushy and grainy.

FAQs

Should you cook chicken before adding to slow cooker? ›

Chicken breast fillets can be placed directly into the slow cooker, but to create richer, deeper flavours and better visual appeal, first sear the chicken breast in a hot pan over medium-high heat on each side for 1-2 minutes.

Why is my chicken tough after cooking in crockpot? ›

In addition, chicken breast has less fat and can become dry (chewy or rubbery) if cooked for too long. Without moisture, the protein fibers in the chicken become elastic.

Why do you brown chicken before putting in slow cooker? ›

Perhaps the biggest tip is to make sure to sear the chicken, even if it's just on one side, prior to cooking. That's because it helps to not only enhance the chicken's visual appeal with that golden color but also makes the meat more flavorful, which won't happen if you just toss it in the Crock-Pot.

How do you not overcook chicken in a slow cooker? ›

If your chicken is dry, you are overcooking it. Try cooking it less and get a meat thermometer and never cook it past 165 degrees F internally. You can actually cook it a little bit less, to like 160 degrees and let it rest for 20 minutes.

Should chicken be covered in liquid in slow cooker? ›

Using a nice, long, low-and-slow cook time helps chicken breasts retain plenty of moisture - but you can certainly opt to add a splash of water or chicken stock to the crockpot if you like! If you're worried about dry chicken, you can also swap boneless skinless chicken thighs in for a bit of extra moisture.

How long to leave chicken in crockpot on low? ›

Cover your crock pot and cook chicken breasts on low for 6-7 hours or on high for 3-4 hours. Chicken is done when the internal temp reaches 165 degrees F. Use chicken in your favorite recipes. Perfect for shredding!

How long does chicken need to cook in the crockpot? ›

Step 4: Cook on High for 4-5 Hours or Low 7-8 Hours. Cooking time will depend on the size of your chicken. Chicken is done when the internal temperature reaches 165 F and juices run clear, but also when it's so tender you can shred it with a fork.

Is it okay to put raw chicken in a slow cooker? ›

Yes, you can put raw chicken in a slow cooker! Slow cookers and Crock-Pots are designed to cook raw meats. The direct heat from the pot, lengthy cooking time and steam created from the tightly covered container destroys bacteria, making slow cooking safe. You can put frozen chicken in a slow cooker, too!

Why are my potatoes still hard in the crockpot? ›

Insufficient Liquid: If there wasn't enough liquid in the crockpot, it could have caused uneven cooking. Potatoes need to be fully submerged in liquid to cook evenly. Old Potatoes: Very old or stored potatoes can become starchy and may not soften as well during cooking. It's best to use fresh, firm potatoes.

Is it better to cook chicken low and slow or high and fast? ›

Question: When I cook chicken, it always comes out tough. Am I cooking it too long, too short, too high or too low? The slower you cook chicken, the better. That's the overall rule for cooking protein.

What happens if you don't brown meat before a slow cooker? ›

Yes, you should brown your meat (beef) before. The meat will cook without browning in the slow cooker but it will have a boiled flavor to it. It will also look kind of grey.

What happens if you don't brown chicken before cooking? ›

Skipping browning isn't a shortcut, but is instead another path to delicious results. Think about chicken soup: Because the chicken isn't browned, it's spoon-tender with a delicate flavor. The same goes for chicken mafe, chicken tinga, khao man gai and so many other classic dishes.

Is 3 hours in a slow cooker enough for chicken? ›

Over and over AND OVER again, we have found that chicken breast registers at 165° F (the FDA recommended safe temp) right around 3 hours on LOW. Sometimes less, sometimes more depending on the size of the breast or other ingredients in the slow cooker.

Can you slow cook chicken for 8 hours? ›

Place chicken breasts in slow cooker, and sprinkle with seasonings (and liquid, if using). Cover and cook on low for 8 hours, or until the chicken shreds easily with a fork. (*If making a smaller batch, keep an eye on your slow cooker as the chicken will likely need less cooking time.)

Can I leave food in a slow cooker overnight off? ›

It is not recommended to keep food warm in a slow cooker overnight by turning it off and not opening it until the next morning. Doing so could create an environment that allows bacteria to grow, which can make the food unsafe to eat.

Is it safe to cook raw chicken in a slow cooker on low? ›

Research conducted by USDA FSIS indicates it's safe to cook large cuts of meat and poultry in a slow cooker.

Is it better to cook chicken breasts on low or high in slow cooker? ›

We found that the only way to cook chicken (and turkey) in a slow cooker is on the low setting and for a relatively short amount of time.

Should meat or vegetables go in crockpot first? ›

Fill the crock pot at least half full and no more than two-thirds full. Thaw frozen meats and vegetables before placing in the crock pot. Place dense vegetables in crock pot first, such as carrots and potatoes, since they take longer than meats to cook.
