The Spring 2024 Fashion Trends Are Here, And They Are Glorious (2024)

The Spring 2024 Fashion Trends Are Here, And They Are Glorious (1)

It's shaping up to be a season of easy elegance with these fun-to-wear wardrobe tweaks

The best part about spring and its natural consequence, summer, is the ease of it all: no rules, no restrictions, just unabashed freedom. Appropriately, unlike other fashion seasons where the trends have been more cut and dried, Spring 2024 is more fluid in its style suggestions: there is no one way of taking part.

Think of this breakdown as a tool for getting the most out of your warm-weather wardrobe. There’s the colour that’ll keep you tied to May skies, the dress primed to appear (and re-appear) at every social gathering and the long-forgotten accessory that’s guaranteed to spark joy.

The seasonal staple: An airy white dress

Chloé

A sartorial icon of the summer season, the white dress has shed its crisply tailored, upper crust influences for a more effortless energy, resulting in an array of vapour-light pieces to float around in on sun-tinged social occasions. Alberta Ferretti’s sheer cotton version looks plucked directly from the Italian countryside and is ideal for hosting a candlelit dinner al fresco. A light-as-air, gathered-and-knotted garment by JW Anderson was almost certainly designed for long walks on the beach. Silver buttons punctuated the collar of a Jil Sander column dress, the kind you’d pull out for a round of poolside co*cktails. Ah, summer, can’t you just taste it?

The standout moment: Chloé

Leave it to Chloé to deliver the most immaculate white dress accompanied by all the trappings of a main feed-worthy vacation essential: ultra-fine ribbed knit, perfectly puffed sleeves and cut-outs that actually feel cool again.

The layering method: Sportswear, elevated

Gucci

Coperni

Blessed with athletic prowess or regularly relegated to the bench? Doesn’t matter much with the season’s smartest way to incorporate sportswear staples into your rotation: pairing them with sophisticated pieces. An oversized rugby polo stolen straight from the pitch made a few notable appearances at Dries Van Noten. Our favourite version was coupled up with a sheer skirt and black duster coat. At Coperni, a technical catsuit that wouldn’t be out of place at the Tour de France was topped with a languid suede blazer, a delicious contrast worth copying.

The standout moment: Gucci

Creative director Sabato De Sarno’s debut collection came with tepid reviews, but if the unexpectedly luxe pairing of a camel-coloured bomber jacket with a patent midi skirt is any indication of how he’ll reimagine sportswear, the new Gucci’s got our attention.

The jewellery: Bold bangles

Carolina Herrera

Loewe

The last time chunky bangles were the accessory du jour, they shared the spotlight with two other 2000s-era accoutrements, skinny scarves and trucker hats. If your style memories from that time are somewhat unsavoury, this iteration, we promise, is a whole lot more elevated. At Schiaparelli, a bulbous bangle—nay, arm piece—nearly swallowed the entire forearm in gleaming gold; Carolina Herrera ran with the gilded theme too, doubling up for extra impact. And aughts-era nostalgia was strong at Balmain, where a quilted bangle embellished with all-over gems gave us a pleasing pause.

The standout moment: Loewe

A slightly more subtle take on the bulky bangle resurgence, Loewe’s organic design looks as if molten metal has been poured into a gurgling stream, its currents carving out elegant folds.

The colour: Barely blue

Tod's

Zimmermann

Sometimes the season’s most talked-about hue is in your face and impossible to miss (looking at you, last fall’s red.) This spring, it’s decidedly on the subtler side: a whisper of pale blue, the mere suggestion of an aqueous wash. The watercolour shade was splashed everywhere: slinky silk dresses at Fendi and Ermanno Scervino, a structured cotton shirt dress at Zimmermann and in diaphanous looks at Jason Wu and Prada that saw floaty tendrils bringing the ethereal colour to life.

The standout moment: Tod’s

Despite its extensive applications, we swoon for muted blue’s simplest iterations. Italian fashion house Tod’s did a good job at that with its closing look, a body-skimming, ’90s-reminiscent strapless dress updated to modern day in a perfect shade of steel blue.

The silhouette: Micro measurements

Ottolinger

Acne Studios

Gird your loins: the dimensions for spring are about to get itty bitty, teeny weeny, totally tiny…you get the abridged picture. The emphatically NSFW trend leaned on nearly non-existent inseams (sometimes completely absent) to give gams major play. Narrow strips of fabric were passed off as ultra-mini skirts at Acne Studios, while Ottolinger’s hot pants, which verged on straight-up underwear, confusingly came belted; there wasn’t much to hold up. Perhaps the most approachable of these short stories was at Victoria Beckham, where angular, oversized sweaters were front-tucked into leather briefs, offering a little extra coverage for the bum-shy.

The standout moment: Miu Miu

Only Miuccia Prada could convincingly sell us on a pair of swim briefs as the perfect match for a button-up polo and blazer. Pants are indeed optional, but our warm-weather styling takeaway is: Business on the top, (pool) party on the bottom.

The Mob Wife Trend Can Move Along Now, Please

Beneath the frosted curls and fur, it glorifies an unhappy housewife dependent on her husband’s ill-gotten gains

I’ll say it: I find the “mob wife” trend disturbing.

I get it: it’s yet another fashion knee jerk trend that has swept TikTok and seeped out to the real world so fast, it will likely be over before we know it. Viral “how to dress like a mob wife” videos began appearing in October, notably by creator Sarah Arcuri, who anointed herself the “mob wife aesthetic CEO,” and the trend accelerated when pop star…
